Partnering with Morro Bay Bird Festival

In January of 2024, and with open arms, the Morro Coast Audubon Education Committee hosted the Community Family Day for the Morro Bay Bird Festival. Over 150 children with parents and grandparents in tow participated and picked up their Passport to Knowledge, their “ticket” into the multi-purpose room for fun activities.

In the multi-purpose room, the kids created hummingbird mobiles, snowy plover chicks, ice cream cone bird feeders, paper bag owl puppets, and oak gall animals. They could start a painted nature journal and were banded to show gender, age, wingspan, and location just like a bird. They took their selfies at the Learning Among the Oaks table while munching on popcorn.

Partnering with Los Osos Library

Morro Coast Audubon Education volunteers partnered with the Los Osos Library to present a featured morning program at Sweet Springs Nature Preserve for library patrons and residents. Over 35 adults and children spent a lovely morning learning about this special place. Sweet Springs Nature Preserve is owned and managed by Morro Coast Audubon Society.

The Education team explained the various displays set up at the entrance where the visitors learned more about birds that use this preserve for their seasonal homes. Nests are studied, including their construction and usage, and visitors learned about feathers and bones. All were encouraged to borrow a pair of binoculars for a guided family bird walk, led by our talented field trip leaders.
