Education-BIYN

Birds In Your Neighborhood For Elementary Schools

Our committee members present a Birds In Your Neighborhood (BIYN) program to 3rd and 4th grade students throughout SLO County. Our BIYN classroom program includes a PowerPoint presentation with hands-on study stations. The stations include different types of bird nests, types of feathers, and taxidermy. The taxidermy is for learning about the field marks used to identify birds. After the classroom presentation, our MCAS education committee members return to each class for a schoolyard bird walk. Each student uses real binoculars, most for the first time, to find their schoolyard birds. Smiles all around!

The BIYN program has been presented to students in several elementary schools that are located in the cities of Atascadero, Paso Robles, Templeton, Santa Margarita, Cayucos, Cambria, Los Osos, and San Luis Obispo.

Are you interested in sharing your love of birds and nature with the next generation? Our very dedicated and dynamic MCAS Elementary Education Committee is always looking for a few more team members as we continue to expand our program to the youth of San Luis Obispo County.
