Morro Coast Audubon Society Presents
FIELD TRIP: Cloisters to the Strand
DATE: Saturday, June 11
TIME: 8:30am to 11am
LEADER: Robbie Revel
CO-LEADER: Freddy Howell
Trip is limited to 15 participants - A waiting list will be started once the trip is full.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through many different habitats; from grassy park, reed lined pond, backyard bird feeders, tree tunnel and finally out to the Morro Strand State Park Beach. RED-WINGED and BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS visit many of the feeders as well as nest in the reeds at the pond. There are a variety of breeding and migrant birds in the willows along the trail north and south. The nuttalli race of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW breeds nearby and is often seen up close. The tree tunnel is a sandy stroll to the beach. Just as the trail reaches the beach sand there is a seasonal pool. In another 100 yards to the north there is another seasonal pool. When present these pools, although small, can sometimes have an amazing variety of species present and easy to view! Look for GULLS, TERNS and SHOREBIRDS. Walk will be on a flat trail and beach with some areas of deep sand. Expect to walk 1 – 2 miles at a slow pace.
Bring a hat, water, snacks, sunscreen, binoculars and field guides (if you have them) and dress in layers to accommodate wind and changing weather. Sturdy shoes are recommended. Restrooms are available. Rain cancels.
